In 2018, I bought a pottery wheel.

I learned how to make pottery in high school ceramics class. I fell in love with clay immediately and I couldn’t get enough. After high school I didn’t have a way of making pottery, but it never quite left my mind. I looked for night courses around my house, hoping for a throwing class, but I couldn’t find any in my area. Then I started watching videos online of potters demonstrating throwing techniques and I felt like I could learn to do it on my own. So, I bought myself a pottery wheel. And I kept watching videos until I could center a half pound of clay, and then pull some sides up, and eventually I had a bowl. A very wonky, lopsided bowl, but it was a bowl! Now I was in business.

“Cut and run” is a sailing term meaning to do anything necessary to make a quick escape, for example a boat might cut its anchor line and “run” down wind in a hurry. I chose the name Cut & Run Pottery because of my love of sailing and my need to find an escape. For me, digging my hands into clay was the perfect escape. Learning to create pottery that’s both beautiful and functional brought me so much joy. I finally found what my soul had been longing for and I was all in.
